Carlsbad is located between
Oceanside and
Encinitas on the coast.
Carlsbad has a thriving flower growing industry, and as you approach Legoland, you can see acres upon acres of flowers being grown on the hills east of I-5.
You can camp on the bluffs above the ocean at South
Carlsbad State Beach. This is something I have done, and there's nothing
quite like falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the surf below.
A walk and/or swim on the beach first thing in the morning is not easily
forgotten.
EVENTS:
Year 2009 Events
March
May
CLIMATE:
Farmer's Market: Wednesdays - 2PM-5PM Roosevelt St between Carlsbad Village Dr and Grand Ave.
Carlsbad Flower Fields: March 1 - May 10 2009, Paseo Del Norte and Palomar Airport Rd. These are the flowers
(arranged in bands of colors) you see from the freeway. Worth the visit!
Carlsbad Village Faire: May 3 and Nov 1, 2009 8AM - 5PM. This is California's biggest
one-day street fair. The weather has been great every time I've been to this twice-yearly event.
The street fair itself is centered on Grand Ave, but it spills onto a few intersecting streets
as well. To get there, take the Carlsbad Village Drive (formerly called Elm
St) offramp from I-5, head toward the ocean, and look for the crowds. Don't worry, you can't
miss it! If you arrive midday, you may find it necessary to park 4 or 5 blocks away, but you'll
walk alot more around the street fair itself - it's HUGE!
While the overall climate in Carlsbad's older areas is very close to
the climate in downtown San Diego, the newer parts of Carlsbad experience
noticably warmer temperatures during the day, and cooler temperatures during
the night. These differences are not extreme, and the annual rainfall is
pretty much the same in both areas.
